The First Days (As The World Dies: A Zombie Trilogy #1)
by Rhiannon Frater
Expected publication: July 5th 2011 by Tor Books

From Goodreads:
Rhiannon Frater’s As the World Dies trilogy is an internet sensation. The first two books, The First Days and Fighting to Survive, have won the Dead Letter Award for Best Novel from Mail Order Zombie. The First Days was named one of the Best Zombie Books of the Decade by the Harrisburg Book Examiner. AmericanHorrorBlog calls Rhiannon Frater “a writer to watch.”

The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.

Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni’s stepson, Jason, from an infected campground.

They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town. There Jenni and Katie find they are both attracted to Travis, leader of the survivors; and the refugees must slaughter people they know, who have returned in zombie form.

Fast-paced and exciting, filled with characters who grab your heart, The First Days: As the World Dies is the beginning of a frightening trilogy.

The Bookish Brunette thought:
OH. MY. GOD. Where do I start? From the very FIRST paragraph- I was hooked!

Jenni- with an ‘i’ is standing on her front porch staring at “tiny fingers” trying to claw their way out from underneath the front door. Her terror IS MY terror from the very beginning, as she recounts the events of her family being transformed into flesh eating zombies before her very eyes.

Her abusive husband had come home the night before claiming that a homeless man had bitten him, slept on the couch and Jenni was awakened by the terrifying screams of her 3 year old son being eaten by his father. (Literally- I am almost trembling just remembering it.)

As Jenni is standing, paralyzed with fear and shock on her porch as her 12 year old ‘now ZOMBIE’ son is about to break through the window- Katie, a stranger in a beat-up white pick-up truck flies into her yard yelling for her to get in the truck.

Jenni barely makes it into the truck as her once precious son, whose last act was unknowingly sacrificing himself to his zombie father in his mother’s place.

Amidst the chaos that has now claimed the United States, there are few places of sanctuary for the ‘living’. After Katie and Jenni risk their lives and save Jenni’s step-son, they make their way to Ashley Oaks (Um WIN… Fab choice in names!)

In Ashley Oaks… comes Travis (the name ‘Travis’ says it all doesn’t it?) The picture of perfection- but which woman will he fall for? Killing zombies, going on rescue missions… in the midst of a Zombie Apocalypse is there even a chance for romance?

There is nowhere to go. There is no escape. Zombies are everywhere. The First Days by Rhiannon Frater is terrifyingly realistic and vividly horrifying, this book is feverish and electrifying- AMAZING in every sense of the word.

Lol, I'm not sure I'm ready for zombies that intense yet! :-)

  6. The zombie part about this book sounds really promising, but…… yet another love triangle?! *sigh*

  7. Actually, there is no love triangle at all. Trust me. I'm the author. Let me repeat one more time…no love triangle. :)And thank you for the WONDERFUL review!Rhiannon Frater

  8. Nope! No love triangle! I guess that's kinda what that little teaser sentence makes it sound like?

  9. Tim Weaver says:

(first, I freakin' HATE Blogger's suck-ass sign in procedures if you're not a Blogger user. I've had more comments disappear into their blackhole of user-unfriendliness than on any other system.Well, a 5 paragraph review of this series is gone. Again. Sorry for you folks. In short, I've had the series for over 18 months, when it was self-pub'd by Ms. Frater.Normally I hate series. This one I liked a lot.Buy it.And, Blogger, pound sand.

  10. @Bookish Brunette, that sentence was removed from the back of the books. I'm not sure why it was included in the first place. I couldn't quite figure that out. I don't like love triangle so I never write about them. I am very happy you enjoyed the book. I think a the heart of the story is the friendship between Jenni and Katie. I love those gals.

  11. Alpa says:

    Sounds like a read.

  12. Maybe THAT'S where I got it… I kept looking at the synopsis I took from Goodreads! But since I only had the ARC for a few days the sentence must have stuck with me subconsciously!!!

  13. Mel says:

Sounds fab and right up my zombie street! I've wanted a copy ever since I first heard about it – and reading about what a creepy start it has just has me wanting it more! Any chance it will be released in the UK sometime soon – or am I to look on the book depository? :)

  36. Awesome review! I want it! I want it! I want it!

  37. Tim Weaver says:

I am sorry, but anyone who is into zombie and PAW fiction and gets worked up over a character getting eaten…regardless of who that character is…should rethink the genre as being for them. That's the allure of this genre…is that ANYONE can be a victim. That's what creates the tension. Authors in this genre do a disservice to their readers, IMO, if they decide that certain elements of their world are "not on the menu".The opening scene of AMC's "The Walking Dead" and the backstory of Jenni's toddler as a zombie are what SET THE TONE for these stories. IMO, they're crucial to how those stories work and what promises are made to the reader/viewer.That's one of the reasons I liked this series compared with other ZPAW books I've read.

  38. I've just finished , 'Forbidden' by Tabitha Suzuma..that was intense!!! and many , many other things…so I am in tense mode…lol!! The First Days, sounds tense, but exciting read. I like the sound of this book * hurling onto the TBR pile*Michelle A.

  39. Rie Conley says:

  49. Alison says:

This does sound terrifying. Maybe too scary for me. Travis? :-) Every girl in my grade had a crush on a boy named Travis when I was in middle school…and he knew it too, unfortunately.

  50. Great review! This sounds so awesome!

  51. vvb32 reads says:

i'm feeling the same way after reading the first chapter…

  52. M.A.D. says:

This one sounds grim & rather gritty, but I kinda agree with Tim above: that's part of the unpredictability inherent in the genre – no one's safe. While I'm sure the scene in question would be unsettling at best, I'd still love to read this book! :D

  53. Pabkins says:

OH yes – this is one that I'm going to have to get! Thanks!!
