Tithe (The Modern Faerie Tales #1)
by Holly Black

Published: 3/23/2004

From Goodreads:
Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she travels from city to city with her mother’s rock band until an ominous attack forces the sixteen-year-old back to her childhood home. There, amid the industrial, blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye soon finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms — a struggle that could very well mean her death.

Bookish Brunette thought:
I cannot even tell you how many time Holly Black was recommended to me… And in my typical procrastinatory way, I kept putting it off!

What was I thinking???

I instantly loved  Kaye. From the FIRST page when she stuck her cigarette into her mother’s beer bottle! (what? So I’m a tad on the spiteful side…) The characters in this book are hard to rival, Roiben… well I was instantly taken with him (even though he can be quite tough to handle). Kaye’s childhood faerie friends: Spike, Gristle and Lutie-Loo (Um Lutie-Loo? WIN!) actually I can’t go into them much, because I’ll give away too much of the story… But I loved their names!

The entire faerie world that Holly Black created in Tithe is crazy amazing and magical! I could picture each and every detail of the pixies, dwarfs (dwarves?) and fae. Every place, battle and situation was so beautifully descriptive that I was enthralled (enthralled I tell you!) from beginning to end!

I read this in the span of a few hours, I stayed up until like 2 am because I could NOT tear myself away from this book!

I haven't read any Holly Black either! *blushes* I do, however, have this book sitting on my NookColor. I don't know why I've been putting it off–thanks for moving it up my reading list! I'll have to put it at the beginning of my vacation reading. I mean, after your review, how could I not?!Thanks for sharing!Jessi @ Reading in the Corner

  12. I Love Love Love when a book pulls you in and then takes away your sleep! That means it is very good:) YEAH!

  13. Oh damn… I have been putting off this series only because I need to find the time to invest. But that review makes me want to get it more now.

  14. I read this two years ago and didn't like it; but then I read a novel by the other which I loved, and ever since I have been considering re-reading it. I guess I should? I remember liking the character and the world Black created, and I have a much harder time remembering what I didn't like, in fact… Well that's confusing :P

  15. Lindsay says:

I almost bought the paperback boxset today at Border's… rethinking my decision to leave it on the shelf!

  16. I have a terrible confession I have to make: I've never read Holly Black. I got to meet her, and I LOVE her (she's so bright and funny). But I can see how its not a far stretch to see her books are rated highly! I suppose I'll have to get on that bandwagon! :P

  17. I haven't read Holly Black but I'm not big on YA so that probably explains it.

  18. Aylee says:

Excellent! I have yet to read anything by Holly Black but I feel I really must give her a try sometime, the way people rave about her work! Also, I would love to try another faerie series (the only one I've read is the Wicked Lovely Series). There's a good chance I might like this faerie series better!

  19. I read this book a few years back and remember enjoying it. I've always meant to read more by this author but haven't yet. I just checked out White Cat from the library so hopefully I'll get the chance to read it soon.
