If You Stay by Courtney Cole Interview with Courtney Cole

Would you tell us a little about your latest novel, If You Stay?

If You Stay is about a flawed guy… his issues have issues.  He has a good reason, but still.  He’s an asshole.  He decided to stop trying in life (even though he’s from an affluent family) and just do whatever makes him feel good- specifically, drugs and women.  But then he meets Mila and everything changes.

Pax… YUM. I think, I do in fact, have a thing for guys with an ‘x’ in their name! How do you pick names for your characters??

I picked Pax’s name because it means Peace in Latin.  When Pax’s mom first held him when he was born, she felt such a sense of peace that she knew she had to name him Pax.

Is ‘If You Stay’ a standalone novel or will it be part of a series?

It will be part of the Beautifully Broken series.  Each of the books will feature different main characters—although you’ll still see cameos from previous characters in them.  Book two will be If You Leave and it will focus on Madison Hill, Mila’s sister.

As a writer of paranormal and contemporary fiction, which comes easiest for you??

Contemporary is easier for me.  I love Paranormal, but it is mentally exhausting to write it—you have to create entire worlds.  It’s not for the faint of heart. It gives me a brain ache…but it’s worth it.

Out of your many books, do you have a fav character? Who is it and why?

Lord have mercy. They’ve all been favorites at one time or another for different reasons.  One of my all time faves, I guess, is Luca from Of Blood and Bone.  He really got into my head when I was writing him. He’s so dark and damaged, yet still so achingly sexy.

If you could trade places with any character in any of your books, who would it be? Why?

I think Em from The Moonstone Saga.  She’s a badass immortal with some pretty awesome powers.

Which of your characters is most like you?

Hmmmm.  I think Reece (from Dante’s Girl) is very like teenage me.  Mila might be similar to me as an adult.. she’s laid-back and creative, and she takes things as they come.  I’m like that.

What has been the most fulfilling accomplishment to you when it comes to your writing career?

Having so many readers who tell me that they love my work.  Oh my gosh- it’s incredible.  I love, love, love it.

What books would you recommend to fans of your work?

A book by someone else that is similar to mine?  Hmmm.  Eeep. This is hard since my books are all very different.  If we’re talking about If You Stay, then I think I would recommend something like Hopeless by Colleen Hoover (if you’re one of the very few people who haven’t read it yet).  It’s got the same gritty, raw feel.

Tell us something totally random about yourself… (like: I collect flamingo paraphernalia… or Someday I want to meet Charlie Hunnan).

Flamingos?  That surprises me.  Are they zombie flamingos?  Because I could totally see that.
I collect Hula Girls (you know, the kind that dance on the dashboard of your car).  I don’t put them in my car, but I keep them in my office. They just make me happy. I don’t know why.

Fav book ever:  The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.

Fav song (right now): The Last Time by Taylor Swift and Gary Lightbody.  It reminds me of Pax and Mila.

Summer or Winter:  SUMMER!  (I say this as I look at the two feet of snow in my yard).

Chocolate or Vanilla: Triple Death by Chocolate.

Team Zombie or Team Vamp:  Don’t kill me or unfriend me, but Team Vamp.  I think zombies are kind of gross.  *ducks as Ash throws something at my head*

Thank you so much for having me, sweetpea.  You know I love you!  And us Kansas girls have to stick together!

*looks around to see if anyone saw the mini ceramic flamingo fly in Court’s direction*

Thank YOU for being here chick!!!! <3

24-year old Pax Tate is an asshole.

He’s a tattooed, rock-hard bad-boy with a bad attitude to match.

But he’s got his reasons.

His mother died when Pax was seven, leaving a hole in his heart filled with guilt although he doesn’t understand why. What he does know is that he and his dad are left alone and with more issues than they can count.

As Pax grew up, he tried to be the kid his father always wanted; the perfect golden boy, but it didn’t work. His dad couldn’t overcome his grief long enough to notice and Pax couldn’t keep up the impossible perfect façade.
So he slipped far, far from it.

Now, he uses drugs and women to cope with the ugliness, the black void that he doesn’t want to deal with. If he pretends that the emptiness isn’t there, then it isn’t, right?

And it’s never more apparent than when he meets Mila.
Sweet, beautiful Mila Hill is the fresh air to his hardened frown, the beauty to his ugly heart. He doesn’t know how to not hurt her, but he quickly realizes that he’s got to figure it out because he needs her to breathe.

When memories of his mother’s death resurface from where he’s repressed them for so long, Mila is there to catch him when the guilt starts making sense. Mila is the one…the one who can save him from his broken troubled heart; from his issues, from the emptiness.

But only if he can stop being an asshole long enough to allow it.

He knows that. And he’s working on it.

But is that enough to make her stay?

 Interview with Courtney Cole

Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. She has a degree in Business, but has since discovered that corporate America is not nearly as fun to live in as fictional worlds. She loves chocolate and roller coasters and hates waiting and rude people.

Courtney lives in quiet suburbia, close to Lake Michigan, with her real-life Prince Charming, her ornery kids (there is a small chance that they get their orneriness from their mother) and a small domestic zoo.
