AARS The Tour Interview with Bethany Griffin!

Today I have the super awesome Bethany Griffin, author of Masque of the Red Death and Handcuffs as a part of the Authors Are Rockstars Tour!

Hi Bethany!!!! Just excuse me while I fangirl over you for a second…. *deep breath* deep breath*

I have to respond to this by saying that I teach high school and that being stared down by a roomful of sophomores keeps a person humble! However, when we meet new people my 9 year old always whispers, “Did you tell them you’re famous?” And I’m always like, “I think that if I was famous I wouldn’t have to tell them I was famous…”

Okay… sorry! Moving on… Thank you so much for being here today at the Bookish Brunette, during Fiktshun and Two Chicks On Books Authors Are Rockstars tour!!!

12924275 Interview with Bethany Griffin!Masque of the Red Death was simply AMAZING. Seriously, one of my favorite books ever! When you were creating the world that Araby lived in… What did you seek inspiration from?

First, thank you! I’m flattered that you thought it was amazing. It’s a funny story that when I started planning Masque, I hadn’t decided to set it in the past…I sort of envisioned a regular futuristic post-apocalyptic book…it wasn’t until I thought…what if a plague had wiped out everyone around the time of Poe’s death? that the book really took off for me. I had a year in my head, and I made everything either fit that year, or I imagined that the technology had diverged after the plague. So the story has the feel of existing outside of real history, in that aspect I was inspired by Stephen King’s Gunslinger series. The world is really dark, but history is really dark. I tried to make it a world that you almost wanted to live in (The Debauchery Club) but then you would realize there are bodies in the streets and you don’t really want to live there. As I was writing I thought about Victorian city conditions and conditions during plague outbreaks a good deal, and a lot of Araby’s world just came out of my own weird brain.

When I think “dystopian” and freakishly crazy mutated airborne pathogen that will KILL you unless you wear a MASK over your face- I instantly think “gas mask” type, HUGE metal contraption covering your entire face/body! But you made them porcelain and almost dainty… which to me is even more creepy awesome than full body armor! What was your reasoning behind the delicate vs. masculine nature of the masks?

Well, the masks were hard because it’s hard to write characters whose faces are hidden all the time. I had a collection of fairly creepy china dolls as a child, so the china masks actually seemed sort of horrible to me, but still possibly attractive? Or less unattractive than a gas mask type thing. I wanted the masks to be delicate and sinister at the same time.

You have two VERY interesting heroes in Masque of the Red Death, both of them are SO different, yet so compelling! Have you noticed any Team trend among your fans? Do you have a favorite? (*cough* I LOVE Elliott *cough*)

It actually seems pretty split, although I will say that the people who hate Elliott…hate Elliott. I think that Araby loves one of them and that the one she is more compatible with may not be the one she loves. Favorites? Elliott scenes are really fun to write, but Will gets some good scenes, too. It’s a true fact that at one point I kept typing Williott, and even said it out loud once when I was trying to explain a scene to my husband. He gave me a really weird look.

Masque has been published all over the world! Which cover is your fav???

I love something different about each cover, but the Greenwillow (US) cover was the first, and now that I’ve seen the cover for Dance of the Red Death (I know, I know, sorry I can’t share yet) I have to say that the two covers together are breathtaking. I love the heart-shaped blood drop on the UK cover, and I love the girl’s tattoo (a raven) on the German cover, and I can’t wait to see the rest.

Have you anticipated the number of books that will ultimately be in the Masque series?

2. Masque of the Red Death and Dance of the Red Death. It’s sort of one big book that got split in half…I love the pensive/hopeful end to book 1, I do get why some people weren’t satisfied with it, and Dance is more a second part of Masque than it is a sequel. Araby’s story will be wrapped up in book 2.

Did you listen to any playlists or particular band while writing Masque?

I don’t listen to music while I write, but I listen to music while I plan and think…with Masque that was a lot of Portishead, and with everything I write, a lot of Nine Inch Nails and Tool.

Can you tell us anything about what MIGHT be coming up next for Araby in Dance of the Red Death? I’m pretty much DYING for it!!

There will be more bats and more crocodiles, and more Will and Elliott. Of course, we get a masked ball, and we get to see Araby come alive and really fight for what she wants.

Randomness:

I may have been stalking your website and reading your bio… You said on your first Christmas you got a book… What was the book? Do you still have it??

I still have a lot of my books…but I’m not sure which one that was…just the story that my mom tells I’m sure I already had other books, my mom kept me well-stocked with books. I will say that the first picture book I could actually read was the Berenstein Bears and the Spooky Old Tree.

Who’s your favorite character from The Wizard of Oz and why?

If we’re going with the entire Oz series, I’d say the Hungry Tiger (he always wanted to eat babies but didn’t do it because he had a conscience). Or possibly Eureka, Dorothy’s hateful white cat from Book 4, Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, I…had a cat named after her.

And of course… Are you Team ZOMBIE or Team Vamp? *cue Jeopardy theme music*

I’d have to go team Vamp, zombies are really gross, although I do spend an inordinate amount of time planning how I would avoid them/survive a zombie apocalypse. But no, my heart will always belong to Anne Rice’s vampires…Louis…or possibly Lestat.

Favorites:

Book: Lord of the Rings followed by The Time Traveler’s Wife
Movie: 12 Monkeys
Candy: Snowcaps
Color: Green

Masque of the Red Death (Masque of the Red Death #1)
by Bethany Griffin
Published: 4/24/2012

From Goodreads:

Everything is in ruins.

A devastating plague has decimated the population. And those who are left live in fear of catching it as the city crumbles to pieces around them.

So what does Araby Worth have to live for?

Nights in the Debauchery Club, beautiful dresses, glittery make-up . . . and tantalizing ways to forget it all.

But in the depths of the club—in the depths of her own despair—Araby will find more than oblivion. She will find Will, the terribly handsome proprietor of the club. And Elliott, the wickedly smart aristocrat. Neither boy is what he seems. Both have secrets. Everyone does.

And Araby may find something not just to live for, but to fight for—no matter what it costs her.
