It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside. When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?
No matter how many times you hear that this book is completely and ABSOLUTELY, Earth shattering-ly AMAZING… You aren’t going to believe it until YOU read it! So PRE-ORDER IT. Take June 19 OFF of work… Make sure your kids are at a sitter’s, wait at the door for the UPS man-
tackle him as he walks up the driveway wait patiently at the door for him to bring you your package. Sit down with your coffee, tea, pop… Whatever your beverage of choice is- and have at it! You WILL NOT REGRET this plan of action.
“This must be what Dorothy felt like, I think. Maybe. If Dorothy was six scared teenagers and Oz was hell.”
(I’d like to think this little tribute of Kansas AWESOME was a shout out to the Zombie Queen!!)
Sloane had finally decided she’d had enough. Enough of being her father’s punching bag, enough of feeling… nothing since Lily walked out of her life, she’d had enough of EVERYTHING. And the day she decided to end it all, also happened to be the day the dead got up and started FEEDING on the living.
Sloane and five other kids take shelter from the undead inside their high school. Sloane is patiently waiting for the dead the GET IN, so that she can escape the other survivor’s and end her life- the way she had planned to before the world went to hell and back.
“Where’s your family, Sloane?”
“Dead like yours?”
I have no idea if Rys’s family is dead or not until I see how the question cuts him. He winces, but maybe he shouldn’t have asked if he didn’t want me to rip his chest wide open.”
If I had to take a leap, I’d say This is Not a Test is more about a young girl trying to survive HERSELF, more than trying to live through the zombie apocalypse. Fighting inner demons, and breaking your heart along the way…
“I wonder if she hears him where she is now, if she hears his voice and his footsteps in her dreams… Or maybe the voice and the footsteps she hears are mine. I hope they are. I hope I’m the ghost that belongs to her.
I’ve never read a more emotionally jarring and absolutely soul crushing story than Sloane’s from This is Not a Test.
“I’m standing on the edge of a cliff and it feels like my heart is missing.”
Sloane is not your run of the mill heroine. She’s severely broken and horrifically damaged. She’s very detatched and unfeeling from the entire situation… Which I believe was the entire point… She is also BRAVE beyond compare. I’m still at a loss for words- two weeks later, so I’ll just say:
This is Not a Test by Courtney Summers is the best book I’ve read all year.
