From Goodreads:
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

In this electrifying debut, Tahereh Mafi presents a world as riveting as The Hunger Games and a superhero story as thrilling as The X-Men. Full of pulse-pounding romance, intoxicating villainy, and high-stakes choices, Shatter Me is a fresh and original dystopian novel—with a paranormal twist—that will leave readers anxiously awaiting its sequel.

goodreads Book Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

I thought:
Well, I’ve already completely prepared myself for everyone to dispute me in my opinion of this book… *cringe* I’m ready! Don’t get me wrong… It WAS a good book! But the way everyone completely GUSHED over this one, I was under the assumption it was going to be EARTH SHATTERING… But, all I got was the: “Hmmm, good book.” feeling. I’m not sure what all the fuss is about I guess.

With THAT out of the way-
Shatter Me was suspenseful like you CAN’T BELIEVE! Half the time I really thought I was going to have a heart attack or burst into tears… Or both. First- prepare yourselves for Adam. Oh. Dear. God. Seeeeriously, it’s not even funny how HOT this leading man was! Thinking back on him, I’m almost tingly! *shivers*

“I know him.
I’ve tried so hard to stop thinking about him.
I’ve tried so hard to get those blue blue blue eyes out of my head but I know him it’s been three years since I last saw him.
I could never forget him.
But he’s already forgotten me.”

This is a very cryptic book, we’re give just enough of the story throughout the entire thing to think we know what’s going on, even though that hint of the HUGE underlying mystery is always there just simmering below the surface. Like it’s getting ready to blow at any second!

I think I’ve made myself clear that it would be extremely difficult to even think about touching Adam in the HOT spectrum. Let me say it again, he is made of YUMMY. Anyfictionalboytoy… I LOVED Kenji! What can I say? I’m a sucker for flirty sarcasm and wholly inappropriate men!

“I don’t know why, but I kind of like it when you threaten me.” ~Kenji

Just when we think all is lost and we’ve taken this journey through this cryptic, heart-breaking book just to watch everything slip through Juliette’s finger’s… it doesn’t. And Shatter Me takes an extremely unexpected turn that I DID like, but I felt didn’t fit with how the entire book had been set up so far. Which in some cases, this can make or break the story! That’s not to say the book wasn’t a great read, because it totally was! I just went into this book expecting to be completely knocked off my feet and ten kinds of blown away… and for me, that just didn’t happen.

Great, fair review Ash. We only ever expect your opinion and you've given it. I must admit I also cringe when I dislike books that everyone else seems to love, but it happens. I was completely not won over by Hush,Hush and even less so by Crescendo.I'm very interested in the premise behind Shatter Me – I'm less interested in the dystopian angle, but the superhero/paranormal has me keen!ShelaghThe Word Fiend

  2. I really liked Shatter Me. Everyone gushed, true, but in terms of Mafi's writing style I thought it totally lived up to the post-BEA buzz and hype. Was it the steamiest book I've ever read? Well, heck no. But I thought it was sweet and romantic and plenty steamy for its target audience, and for what it was, I did love it. Great thoughts! As always, I enjoyed reading them! :)

  3. LisaILJ says:

Thanks so much for this review. I really count on these types of reviews to help temper my expectations for anything. The way I look at it, the more awesome everyone says something is, the more you go into it insanely high expectations. Usually it disappoints because you have built it up so much in your mind. That being said, I can't wait to read it, but I am glad to know it will be o.k. if it does not blow my mind.

  4. You gave us your honest thoughts – that's important! :) I personally was one of the ones who was blown away by the book, but I am SO glad to see someone sharing my love for Kenji. I am half in love with Adam but I think I want to marry Kenji. :)The ending was a lot different than the rest of the book, but I feel like it really set up for the sequel!Molli at Once Upon a Prologue

  5. The zombie Queen has lost her mind??hahaha j/k <3Love you honest opinion!!THAT being said, I loved and & got knocked down enough for the both of us =)Happy Reading!

  6. Lea says:

This is such an awesome review Ash!Honestly, I felt the same way about reviewing Crossed by Ally Condie because I know how many people love that series and are invested in the characters, but it just didn't do anything for me personally. So I understand having to admit you weren't as psyched about a book as everyone else is! Honest reviews are always the most interesting, and make me want to read those books even more, so I'm looking forward to getting my hands on this one to see what it's like :)Lea @ LC's Adventures in Libraryland

  7. Sherre says:

Thanks so much for this review. I am waiting on this book and it should be here any day now *peeks out the window at the mailbox* Glad to see you loved bit but it didnt "rock your face off" because I was getting a little worried!

  8. Jenny says:

I really enjoyed this one as well Ashley, but like you, I wasn't absolutely blown away by it. I loved Adam, I thought the writing was beautiful, but I wanted to know more about this world, I felt cut off from it. I think a lot of that was intentional, we were supposed to feel cut off, but I'm way too curious for my own good and like to know what's going on:)

  9. Im a bit nervous now. Because I take your obinions to heart. You always give me good recommendations and reviews. Ive been dying to read this one esp since people said it was absoultly amazing!!!!! So we will see. I will be picking up my copy tom :)Great review girl. Looking forward to meeting this epic hottie too!

  10. Sounds fab. I keep reading great reviews for this one.

  11. Missie says:

Well, I appreciate your down to earth perspective, otherwise I would have been sorely disappointed, I think. And who isn't a sucker for wholly inappropriate men?! This girl is for sure! :)

  12. Tristan says:

hahaha I also have a weakness for inappropriate men….someone has to like them right? Great review Ash and I totally get it when you love the book but there's so much hype it kinda ruins it. This is the first review I've read on this book for that reason. ;) Tristan @ Reads With Wreckless Abandon

  13. I absolutely LOVE flirty sarcasm and wholly inappropriate men, as well! I'm actually very excited for this one, but I'm going in knowing it's dystopian and that I need to be weary. So much of the dystopian newness has worn off the genre and it's hard to find an original. I still love them, just in a different way. LOL! DIVERGENT was awesome, though. I think because I went in thinking the above and came out refreshed and renewed and a little broken which is exactly what I love!

  14. LOL yes, Ashley!!! "I'm a sucker for flirty sarcasm and wholly inappropriate men!" <– That just made my day because I totally have to agree!! x) There's just something about those rude boys… Anyyywaaay, awesome review, Ashley! I'm glad you liked this one despite the fact that it didn't completely blow you away. I hope the sequel does that for you instead! :)

  15. Hm… even if it didn't blow you away as you expected, it still sounds like a brilly read. I still wants it. I'm just glad that now I won't expect it to blow my socks off. :)

  16. Between the quotes on Gone with the Word's review and your gushing over Adam, I am WAY excited to read this sucker!

  17. Kathy says:

Awww, maybe too much hype? Sometimes that happens to me. I build it up too much. I am glad you were able to enjoy it though.Adam is totally off the scales hot, I agree!Great review!

  18. StephanieD says:

Oh, I knew you'd love Kenji! He's on the right side of obnoxious—the hot kind! And I 100% agree about the ending not fitting with the rest of the book.

  19. Alexa says:

I need to read this one already!! I want to read about yummy male characters! I love witty conversations and a little bit of inappropriate conversations with the opposite sex. This of course had a big thing to do with why I loved Mara Dyer!Ugh I'm so impatient to start this one!

  20. A fantastic review Ashley! I am sooo eager to get hold of this book..I've got to agree with you on flirty sarcasm and wholly inappropriate men ;)Sharon @ Obsession with Books

  21. Ashley says:

I still need to read this one… Yours isn't the only borderline review I've seen. It's nice to see a little balance among all the gush! ;)

  22. Pabkins says:

You are too funny – you don't see why people gushed and I was expecting you would be rating it a 4 or lower what with the way you started off. Course I wouldn't know I haven't read it yet!Pabkins @ Mission to Read

  23. Book Sake says:

Maybe not worthy of 5 stilettos, but 4 is pretty dang good and I will still have to check it out!

  24. Oh I just read a book like that! It is one everyone just LOVED, ADORED, Couldn't Get Enough of—-all I thought was "this is a very sweet read"Great Review! :)
