Girl of Nightmares (Anna, #2)
by Kendare Blake

From Goodreads:

It’s been months since the ghost of Anna Korlov opened a door to Hell in her basement and disappeared into it, but ghost-hunter Cas Lowood can’t move on.

His friends remind him that Anna sacrificed herself so that Cas could live—not walk around half dead. He knows they’re right, but in Cas’s eyes, no living girl he meets can compare to the dead girl he fell in love with.

Now he’s seeing Anna everywhere: sometimes when he’s asleep and sometimes in waking nightmares. But something is very wrong…these aren’t just daydreams. Anna seems tortured, torn apart in new and ever more gruesome ways every time she appears.

Cas doesn’t know what happened to Anna when she disappeared into Hell, but he knows she doesn’t deserve whatever is happening to her now. Anna saved Cas more than once, and it’s time for him to return the favor.

The Bookish Brunette thought:

Our favorite sarcastic, witty and awesomely EPIC ghost hunter is BACK with a vengeance in the second installment of Anna Dressed in Blood! We hit the ground running with Anna, Cas, Thomas and Carmel!

Cas has decided to finish out high school in Thunder Bay, while he’s desperately trying to solve the mystery of what happened to Anna after she disappeared while saving their lives.

Cas KNOWS she’s in pain wherever she is, because he keeps SEEING her and such… Which should literally be impossible because once a ghost has “crossed over” they’re supposed to STAY there. Which in turn leads him to question further WHERE she really ended up after she disappeared with the most evil ghost Cas had ever had to cross before.

As days pass and Cas continually watches Anna burn to death, or throw herself out his bedroom window over and over again… And as it gets to be too much for him to bare any longer – he decides that NO MATTER what the cost- he WILL save her.

But who will save him from himself?

As good as Girl of Nightmares was… It sadly doesn’t hold a candle to Anna Dressed in Blood. It literally KILLS me to say that, and it’s quite possible that my expectations were far too high… And while I was still (mostly) riveted to the pages while Cas works through this nightmare… I was just expecting… More?

Some parts seemed rushed, others seemed way too drawn out or even completely unnecessary in my opinion. I was satisfied with the ending, it was clean and tidy, wrapped in a bow and sealed with a morbid kiss… if you will.

I don’t imagine this series to continue, I can’t fathom WHERE it would go. *sigh* I’m assuming this was a two book series?

Regardless, you should totally read Girl of Nightmares- as it ties up Anna and Cas’s  story quite nicely.

Awesome quotes from my still FAV ghost hunter:

“I think I killed a girl who looked lke this once.”

“I like to keep my crazy all to myself.”

“bumble-fuck nowhere”

  1. Felicia says:

This is the follow up to Anna Dressed in Blood, right? I think I might give this YA a chance! hmmmmmm

  2. Great review babe!! This is only a two book series so this book was the end. I really did love this book, but not quite as much as the first one. I loved the character growth in this one.

  3. P.E. says:

There’s only two books? :( I really liked Anna Dressed in Blood so of course I’ll read Girl of Nightmares. I’ll attempt to temper my expectations though.

  4. Tina says:

This sounds fantastic, I loved the first book and still haven’t reviewed it…….I need to read this ASAP!!!!

  5. Eep! Now I’m scared to read it! I loved Anna Dressed in Blood and have crazy high expectations for this one. Maybe I’ll let it sit a little while longer before digging in.

    The cover sure is pretty!

  6. Molli says:

I really cannot WAIT to dive into ANNA. I love the show Supernatural, and the notion of reading a book from a ghost-hunter’s POV just has me all aflutter. I’m really glad you enjoyed this one, Ashley! It’s too bad it didn’t live up to the first one but that happens sometimes. :/

  7. kendy says:

I liked Anna Dressed in Blood, it sucks to read this one is not as good but I will give it a go…

  8. So sorry you didn’t love it like I did.
    Great review though.
And I did read in an interview with the author (over at The Book Rat) that this is a two only series.
Which hello I totally love Kendare for.

  9. Ah… I so want to read this one. I loved the first and have to know what happens next. I’m glad that it feels complete and perhaps it is only 2 books. That would be great!

  10. Yeah I heard from a friend of mine that was at a signing of Kendare’s last week that this is a two book series. I really enjoyed this one, though I do agree it did feel much more dragged out than the previous one. Cas’ wit is what kept me loving this series, and the creepiness of course! Great review chick!

  11. Phil says:

The problem might have been that authors often have years to work on the first installment of a series, and then when it gets accepted they’re expected to turn around and produce book #2 in 9 months or the like. Perhaps that explains the feeling you got of it being a little rushed? Either way, I’m definitely going to read ANNA now!

  12. Miranda Kavi says:

Great review! I’ve heard so many great things about this series — guess I need to pick it up sooner rather than later.

  13. Heidi says:

I am glad I am not the only one let down by this. I enjoyed it but you are right it does not hold a candle to
Anna. It lacked that edge of your seat adrenaline rush feel that was prevalent in the first book.

  14. Alexa says:

I need to read this one since I did like Anna’s story in the first book. I know Cas is the main character but sometimes I feel this is more Anna’s story than Cas’s.

Glad you still enjoyed this one even though it wasn’t as good as the first.

Thanks for an awesome review chica!
