With all the vampire, werewolf and faerie books out there, it’s easy to become numb to all things supernatural. The antidote? Darkhouse introduces two real and unforgettable characters, Perry Palomino & Dex Foray, amateur ghost hunters who are “attractive, relatable and oddly heroic,” “flawed but lovable ” “slightly crazy” and just the most endearing pair to ever tackle the paranormal…just don’t call them normal. Darkhouse is a thrilling and sexy new take on concepts like Supernatural and The X-Files, bringing a breath of fresh air to a genre that has been inundated with the dead.

***Darkhouse and the Experiment in Terror series is a horror/romance for mature audiences only. Readers who are easily offended by harsh language should think twice about reading it.***

The Bookish Brunette thought:

Absolutely Addictive.

You know that feeling after you read something SO freaking awesome, and suddenly you feel cheated for not having discovered the book/author sooner?? That’s how I felt after reading Sins & Needles by Karina Halle! Having KNOWN of this author for MONTHS and months and only NOW discovering the awesome that is her?

SHAME on me!

So I did what any chick in my position would do. I got myself a copy of EVERY single one of her books. Because I’m super stalkery committed like that. Word.

Immediately proceeding Sins & Needles, I started Karina Halle’s highly acclaimed Experiment in Terror series, and let me tell you… I’m rarely ADDICTED to authors… I can only name 3 or 4 that I will read NO MATTER WHAT the book is- and Karina Halle is now one of those authors.

Okay… On to the book review!

Perry Palomino is special. She doesn’t really KNOW it… And as we get glimpses into her past – it is full of despair and loneliness. When she decides to take her iPhone camera up to investigate her Uncle’s spooky lighthouse, she meets Dex Foray and he changes her life.

After seeing the video of the night they were in the lighthouse on Perry’s sister’s fashion blog (Ada was sick and Perry was posting for her) Dex immediately contacted Perry and pitched his Experiment in Terror online web show idea and asked her to be his host.

She eventually agrees and they head back to the lighthouse to see if Old Roddy, the long dead lighthouse keeper, will show up too.

I LOVED Perry! She is spunky, insecure, sarcastic and MADE of awesome. She’s a flawed character… Perry KNOWS she’s not perfect and doesn’t pretend to be anything of the sort. I COMPLETELY related to her, I FELT her.

“I walked over to the mirror and searched my face for blazing signs of craziness.”

We barely scratched the surface of Dex… And I can’t WAIT to delve deeper into his mind in Red Fox (Experiment in Terror #2)!

Ada!!!! Perry’s sister is EPIC! I seriously loved her, and her blog. The way she presents her blog- is EXACTLY how blogging IS. From social networking, to communication- all of it!

The creepy, old woman with clown-like make-up? Um… Super fabulous character! Although she only shows up in a few scenes, she has a crazy huge impact on the story! I hope we see more of her in the coming books!

The one strike against the first book of the Experiment of Terror series? The Nickelback slam 66% through. Just sayin. No harm came to the band during the making of this book… Or so I was told. icon wink Book Review: Darkhouse (Experiment in Terror #1) by Karina Halle

Seriously though, I was FREAKING OUT. I was super spooked as I got deeper and deeper into Darkhouse, it’s the MIDDLE OF THE DAY… and I’m looking around, jumping at every noise… “I KNOW I HEARD SOMETHING!!!”

Even when I was creeped out, I was also LAUGHING out loud! Darkhouse is a fantastic, addictive and absolutely AWESOME start to the Experiment in Terror series!

  1. I’m not a horror fan and this series is definitely creeptastic at times, but I see it more as Perry and Dex’s story. I’m SOOO addicted it’s not funny. Just wait…the series gets better and better as you go! On Demon Wings is my favorite so far. Can’t wait to see what you think of the rest of the series. Karina is an author that is easy to become addicted to. LOL

  2. Awesome review!! OMG I know when I finally read the EIT series I am going to be kicking myself for not getting to it sooner. I have had the first few books in my nook for like a freaking year. I did love The Devil’s Metal. Her writing is fantastic. I have all of her books too (except EIT #6 I think and the novellas. There’s 6 books now right?), now I just have to get around to reading them.

  3. OK. I’ve had this book on my Kindle for seemingly… For. Ever! WHY haven’t I read this yet? Shame on me! Great review, I need to push this up on my TBR.

  4. Oh I want, I just bought Sins and Needles this morning..but ya know I love me some horror..eep! Adding to my list chica!

  5. My ParaHangover says:

Um, I’m actually one of those, too, who has been reading about Karina Halle and how awesome this series is. It was on sale a while back so I picked up like the first four of the series on ebook, probably like you and Jen. And nope, haven’t picked them up yet *shame, just shame*. I have got to add it to one of my reading challenges so I don’t FORGET about reading this!!!! I’m so glad you gave them a high 5″ stiletto w/ steel tips (okay, I made that up, but you did like it!!)

  6. Smash Attack says:

These books have been all over the place. I must read them sometime. They sound like my kinda fun.

  7. littleread1 says:

I am loving all the Halle love lately. If anyone deserves it, she does! Her writing is fantastic. And her growth through each book as a writer is amazing. You will like The Devil’s Metal. :-) I have no doubt.

  8. Heidi says:

Everyone is buzzing over Sins and Needles today and I must check it out. I read Dark House last winter and I enjoyed it, especially since it was set partly right here in Portland Oregon!

  9. Hm… you got every book of hers after reading this one? Well, that just says it all. Not sure if I can stand the horror (huge chicken here *points to self*), but I do want to give it a try! :)

  10. Lauren says:

Perry sounds fantastic! I’ve heard only amazing things about this book, and for some reason just never checked it out. I just remedied that by putting it on my Kindle (and it’s FREE?? good lord this is a good day)!

Love your enthusiastic review, and thanks so much for putting this back on my radar! I can’t wait to read it :-)

  11. I don’t think I have even heard of this series! But your review has convinced me. I love when I get addicted to authors and have to read everything they write! It doesn’t happen often to me either. Misty Provencher is one of those authors for me though. :)

  12. Sherre says:

I’m glad to see that more and more people are becoming addicted to miss Halle. I’ve been addicted for quite some time now thanks to her review request from me back when she released Red Fox. The fact that she doesnt take a whole year to release the next books in the series is a definate help in my obsession. It’s like just as soon as I start coming down off my high of one of her books…WHAM! Another one comes out and smacks me in the face and I’m back to being a stalkery fan.
