Chick Fight!

by Aaron Patterson

Kate ran as fast as she could but one leg refused to work like it should. Shooting a look over her shoulder, she saw Ang pop an eyeball into her mouth. It burst and eye juice shot out of her chin.

Was that a smile?

Kate wondered if Ang liked being a zombie, or was it the food? She never imagined human brains and flesh could taste so good, it gave her cramps just thinking about it.

The horde converged in the alley. Kate rounded the corner and caught Mirko leaping across the rooftops with something on his back.

The Zombie Queen.

“Argh!”

So, she was hitching a ride, what a loser.

Something ran into Kate from behind and she turned to see Ang gaping at her.

What?

All she had were her thoughts but somehow the others could hear or understand what she wanted. She could not hear anything but moans and grunts from other zombies, but they obeyed her without question. It was nice to have a little army at her command, especially when it came to hunting Ashley.

Nothing, just hungry…I bet. Let’s just get everyone to the meeting place and then we can eat, we can all eat!

Kate gave the order and the horde lumbered down the street toward a large shoe factory. Was it on purpose that she chose this as the final resting place of the wench of a human known as the Zombie Queen? No, it was perfect; she could die surrounded by her precious stilettos.

The gutted out factory had fifty-foot arches with broken-out glass letting in fragmented light. The concrete floor was littered with debris, and standing in a semi-circle was the Mirko clan. All sixty-two of them. Cold, without expression, and deadly… to anyone who was not already dead, that is.

“Let me go…what is this?” Ashley squirmed and swore at Mirko but he seemed unimpressed.

Kate walked forward and her horde let her through like Moses parting the waters. This was it, the moment she had waited for, dreamed about for the last three years.

Kate heard Ashley gasp and Mirko shoved her forward and she tripped and hit the ground hard. “Here she is… we held up our part.”

Kate nodded and she reached for a hanging wire with a box on the end. It had a red and green button. She pressed the green button and two huge doors in the floor off to the left groaned and popped as they opened.

That’s when the screams came.

If zombies were good at anything it was herding. This group of a hundred or so humans did not take long to gather and the Vamps were so thirsty that it took only seconds for all the humans to be sucked dry.

Mirko jumped up out of the pit and wiped blood from his lips. He sucked each finger making sure to get all the blood off, and a smile took the corner of his mouth.

“Well done.”

“You will never get away with this!” Ashley was seething. “I’ll kill every last one of you!”

Marco threw his head back and laughed. “You are the Zombie Queen, not the Vampire Killer.”

“I am a quick study, blood sucker!” She was in attack mode, and as the Vamps emerged full and happy they made a ring around Kate and Ashley. Vamps and zombies stood side by side as the two arch enemies faced off.

“Let’s finish this meat bag!” Ashley hissed.

Zombies, Vampires, Mirko and the Zombie Queen

Do you guys remember when Angeline Kace and Aaron Patterson were on Indie Frenzy like SIX months ago??? Angeline wrote: A Wicked Zombie Short … and Aaron Patterson followed up with New Guy. Ashley, the Zombie Queen, had just been betrayed… everyone wanted the conclusion, and during Zombie Craze 2012 you’re going to get it! But first a recap of the beginning, just in case you’ve forgotten:

Zombies, Vampires, Mirko and the Zombie Queen

Hunter1 Zombies, Vampires, Mirko and the Zombie Queen

A Wicked Zombie Short
by Angeline Kace

Ashley’s heart pounded as she ran from the flesh-eating horde trailing behind her. A four-way intersection loomed in front of her. Shadows leaked between the buildings, but there wasn’t enough time to check the zombie status of the alleys as she approached them.

She dashed forward, lifting her ax above her head, readying to slash out at any zombie sucker stupid enough to block her path.

Which he did. A man lunged out of the darkness. He mumbled something unintelligible through his torn, rotting lips. Flesh stuck between his exposed teeth.

Ashley swung the ax, aiming to chop off her attacker’s head. Her pace and the sweat on her palms weakened her angle, causing the ax to lodge in the side of the man’s neck. She pulled on the ax, jerking the man around her with the momentum, but the ax remained.

The horde behind her sped up at the sight of her delay.

She grabbed the ax’s handle and pushed, throwing the zombie sideways and to the ground, acting as an obstacle to the approaching horde.

She took off, high heels clapping against the asphalt. When the zombies found her, there was only enough time to grab the ax from the shed or change her shoes. She was a pro in her Jimmy Choos, so she opted for the ax.

She glanced behind her; undead men and women lumbered toward her, stepping on and over the fallen zombie, but it didn’t slow them down. “Are you kidding me?” She had to get away, but where? She searched the streets, the buildings.

There.

An apartment building with a drop down emergency ladder and a small metal balcony, high enough to keep her out of the zombies’ reach.

She gritted her teeth and darted toward the building, hoping the drop down ladder worked. When she was close enough, she jumped, catching hold of the ladder’s bottom rung and pulled it down. She scrambled to the top and turned around to pull the ladder up.

A small zombie, which looked more like a ten or eleven year old kid, broke away from the pack and made a mad dash for the ladder. Ashley pulled it up in a race to save her life. But the zombie kid was faster. He jumped on the ladder, yanking it out of her grasp, and climbed.

Ashley pulled off her stilettos and waited. She didn’t feel right about having to beat on this kid, but she felt less right about letting him turn her into one of them.

When the zombie kid was within reach, Ashley struck out, hitting him in his eye with the heel point of her shoe. The tissue pureed, giving way for the solid heel. “Ew.” She pulled the shoe back and hit again and again until he fell from the ladder.

She angled for the ladder when a loud clank sounded and the metal frame holding her up vibrated with the drop of a body from up above. She jumped and spun around, ready to beat the zombie with her stilettos.

“Impressive.” A young man with dark, buzzed hair stood before her with his eyebrow raised. And he looked delicious in a non-zombie way. He wore jeans that hugged his hips and a white t-shirt with tears in it, revealing a toned, tight stomach.

“Are you trying to get yourself killed?” Ashley hit his chest with her high heels. He deserved zombie eye matter on his shirt after giving her a scare like that.

He smirked, looking at her shoes before grabbing them and stepping to the side. “You might want to get that.” He pointed to the ladder the flesh eating droves aimed for.

Ashley turned around and tugged at the ladder, but a zombie reached it and hung on, climbing as she struggled to lift it. She could grab her shoe and throw it at him, but she didn’t think that would be very effective.

The guy moved up behind her, grasping the ladder’s frame—very near where her hand held it—causing heat to rise up her thighs. He pulled the ladder up much faster than she thought possible and grabbed the zombie by the shoulders, pulling it up to the balcony only to seize its head—jaws snapping and arms swinging—and tore the zombie’s head off. He threw the head over the balcony and pushed the rest of the zombie over behind it.

“Who the hell are you?”

“I’m Mirko.” He stuck his hand out for a shake in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. If she wasn’t so stunned, she’d ask for a cigarette.

Ashley glared at his palm. “Yeah, but WHAT the hell are you?”

Mirko’s lip curled in amusement. “Zao Duh, but you might be more familiar with the term vampire.”

Ashley stared at him.

“What?” Mirko asked. “You have zombies running around below you, trying to figure out a way to eat you, and you’re looking like at me like you can’t believe it?”

“Right? But it’s the zombie apocalypse. I knew this would happen. You’re a vampire. That’s a different story.”

A flutter of the curtains in the window above the balcony caught their eyes.

“Shhh,” Mirko ordered.

Ashley snatched up her heels. “You need to leave. I don’t do partners!”

Pounding sounded from the glass. The curtain moved, replaced with the face of a dirty, rotting zombie.

“You do now.” Mirko turned around. “Jump,” and he lowered himself for her to jump onto his back.

“Everybody thinks that just because I’m short, I can’t take care of myself, but I’m wicked sma—”

The window broke, and Ashley hopped onto Mirko’s back.

The zombie crawled out of the window, slashing his arm open, but continued through unphased.

Mirko jostled Ashley into place, bent down, and jumped onto the roof.

She didn’t do partners, but in his case, she was willing to make an exception.

Right??? Didn’t my girl Angeline Kace just ROCK your FACE off with awesome???? I know! Then Aaron Patterson followed her with THIS…

New Guy

by Aaron Patterson

“Who is that?” Kate said with a flip of her hair. Her gaze was fastened on a tall blond guy across the cafeteria.

“Who, him?” Ang said as she shoved another spoonful of yogurt in her mouth.

The guy in question sat down one table over from where she and Ang were sitting. He was wearing dark sunglasses and a black suit.

“Seriously Kate, he is wearing sunglasses inside and what is with the suit? We are not in Canada.”

“I know, but he is cute… even if he is a bit odd.”

“A bit odd?” Ang gave Kate a half grin.

“Shut-up,” Kate looked at her cell and checked Twitter. The talk was already in full force as Airel and Kim went on and on about the new guy.

Matt was in fact from Canada—that explained the suit—but the word was he had been exiled, kicked out of his own country. What did you have to do to get kicked out of a country?

Kate spotted Ashley across the room wearing her usual getup, stilettos, and a mini skirt. Her small frame and thick brown hair made her look more like a doll instead of the biggest—meanest—freak in school.

“Great, here comes the Zombie Queen.” Ang rolled her eyes and polished off the last of her yogurt. “Can she be any more obnoxious?”

Ashley was walking—no strutting up to Matt with a lollipop in her mouth. Kate groaned. “Oh—My—Gawd! She is doing the lollipop thing!” Kate faked a gagging sound and at once had no desire to finish her lunch.

Kate eyed Matt and for no sane reason other than she could not sit by and let Ashley steal yet another hot hunk-of-man-meat out from under her, she stood up and marched over to Matt’s table and sat down next to him just seconds before Ashley could.

Kate could feel her face flush and but no matter how insane it sounded she was not going to let her win again. If it wasn’t for Airel, Ashley would had Michael too.

“Hi, I’m Kate, welcome to our little school.” Her voice was calm, collected and yes, smooth. Kate was so relieved that she almost missed his response.

He stuck out his hand and she saw her reflection in his dark glasses. Kate wondered if he was shy when he didn’t say anything and just give her a cockeyed grin.

Kate was waiting for Ashley to turn around and walk her perfect little body back to wherever she came from, but she sat down across from him and blinked like a fish.

“Matt, I’m Ashley, I see you met Kitty,”

Kate hated the name Kitty and hearing if from Miss Zombie Queen herself and in that tone was more then she could stand. Kate flew to her feet so fast that she smashed her knee on the underside of the table. The pain never registered, all she could see was Ashley.

Grabbing the lollipop from her mouth and threw it across the room and the cafeteria fell silent.

“You bitc—” Ashley swung her hand across Kate’s face and a loud slapping sound rang across the room.

“Chick fight!” Someone yelled and the quiet hush turned into a thunderous mass of yelling and cat calls.

Kate did not stop to think, would not stop until the Zombie Queen was down. Kate grabbed her hair and drug her across the table and Matt fell backward and when he landed his glasses fell off and his eyes showed for the first time.

They were dead and lifeless. One hung at a weird angle and before Kate could register what she was seeing, Ashley was on her back and Ang jumped in the fight screaming like a banshee.

Ashley clawed and scratched at Kate, leaving red marks on one side of her face. Kate flung her over her shoulder and Matt came to life and grabbed Ashley by the hair. He flashed his teeth and tried to bite her arm.

Kate yanked her away and with Ang pushing from behind Kate fell forward and right into Matt’s arms. He wrapped her up and she felt his iron grasp crush her lungs. Matt bit down and ripped into her neck. It did not hurt at first but Kate did not really remember what pain was anymore.

All that remained were screams and the dull pain of hunger that nagged her at all times. She could smell the brains of the humans and craved it, needed it, and would find more. How she had any memories or thoughts, she could not say for sure. Maybe it was what all zombies went through, the dead body and soul but trapped with the memories of a life once lived.

Kate wandered the streets with Ang scavenging for food, for flesh and no matter how hard Kate tried to talk or communicate with Ang it was no use. They were zombies, dead and simple things like speech were now impossible.

To hear a human talk of zombies you would think they were brain dead lumps of flesh. But Kate knew different. She may not have a heartbeat but she did have dreams, goals, and needs—was not that life?

Her one overpowering goal was to kill, to eat and to find her next meal. But above all she wanted to find one person, one miserable human—the person who started it all.

Ashley the Zombie Queen.

She died to save her and now she was dead and that wench was alive and the most feared zombie killer around. The click clack of heels struck fear into her kind, the smell of coffee and that laugh… just the thought made Kate salivate.

Then she smelled it, the human, life and fresh blood. Picking up her pace she dragged her broken left leg and turned the corner to see the Zombie Queen trying to pull an ax from a stupid zombie’s head. The man clearly had no hunting skills.

She still wore her stilettos and Kate planned to rip them from her detached legs.

It was working out as planned, all they had to do was get her into that alley. To make her run through the maze like the little rat she was.

Kate lumbered behind the horde and watched as the left side closed off her escape just like she hoped they would. It was not easy directing a horde of Zombies, but she had nothing but time.

Ashley took hold of the ladder and fought her way up. It was beautiful, just perfect and the best part was Mirko was waiting at the top for her. The vampires came up with the pact in the beginning but Kate was more than happy to join them if it meant killing Ashley.

Vampires wanted blood, Zombies wanted the brain and meat… it was a match made in hell. They rounded them up and drained them and the zombies came in to clean up the remains.
Who’s got the hot guy now—

The Zombie Queen of Flickers Cinemas:
A Deleted Scene from Ushers, Inc.

By Rusty Fischer

“Is there some kind of bachelorette party going on tonight no one told me about?” Zach frowns his cute frown and arranges the red vine licorice bags just-so under the spotless concessions counter.

“God, I hope not,” says Tracy, head buried in the ice machine as she fills a second bucket. “They always complain the theater’s too cold, to which I say… wear some damn more clothes ya silly hussies!”

Cliff snorts, apparently in appreciation of Tracy’s vibrant use of language. “I could warm ‘em up. Guys my, uh, size tend to have massive body heat.”

We all laugh and he gets a sour puss as he arranges the sour patch candies in the second concessions window.

“Why do you ask?” I say to Zach, who stands to his full height and flashes his killer grin, turning my cummerbund region all warm and fuzzy and ooey-gooey.

He straightens his Flickers Cinema bowtie and says, “ ‘Cause that chick who walked in just now was wearing a tiara.”

Tracy wrinkles her nose as we turn to watch a petite woman stumble back toward Theater 6 in high heels and a tattered prom dress. “Yeah, a bloody tiara! Zach, that chick looks like a straight-up zombie, and there you go, just straightening candy like it’s business as usual.”

She gives Zach her best disappointed look, then turns to us, hands on hips: “All right, whose turn is it?”

Everyone looks to me. “Abby’s turn,” Cliff says, avoiding eye contact.

Zander looks nervous and stammers, “I-I-I could take her place.”

“No,” I grumble, putting away the broom and dust pan I’ve been using to clean up popcorn kernels in front of the concession stand between the 6:30 and 7 o’clock shows. “Fair is fair. If it’s my turn to stop the next zombie Armageddon from infecting Flickers Cinemas, then… it’s my turn.”

I walk away, checking to see if my specially equipped zombie-fighting bowtie and cummerbund are both straight. “But it’s your turn next time,” I crack over my shoulder as Zach chuckles his soft, deep chuckle.

“Focus, Abby,” I hiss to myself as I stand just outside the closed door to Theater 6. “Zach has never shown any interest in you before, so why should—”

Just then 12 frightened patrons flow out the door, nearly knocking me down as they make a hasty escape out of the theater.

I stop an older woman straggling behind and ask, “What’s wrong?”

“Some zombie woman is inside stealing everyone’s popcorn!”

Then she hobbles away, holding her walker over her head in case there are anymore zombies trying to attack. (What, from the ceiling?)

I frown. Zombies aren’t big popcorn fans. Most likely our little zombie queen was trying to bite the hands holding the popcorn bags instead.

I steel myself and open the door, smelling the zombie funk the minute I do. I don’t know how to explain it; it’s like death and cheap perfume and hot dogs and cotton candy, all rolled into one.

Zombie Queen is sitting midway up, feet on the chair in front of her, one high heel dangling off her left foot.

“Ma’am?” I ask, creeping up the stairs, hands in my pocket and fingering the four copper pennies I always keep there, just in case.

“Who you calling ma’am?” grunts the Zombie Queen, straightening her tiara while munching on buttered yellow popcorn roughly the same color as her teeth. “That’s ‘Zombie Queen’ to you.”

I’m a few steps from her now, palm growing clammy around the pennies. She’s small and petite, but tough; and I don’t just mean her mouth. Ushers, Inc. is still new, and we’ve only fought a few zombies so far, so I’m hardly an expert.

“Didn’t you see the sign out front?” I ask, inching up next to her row. “The one that said… ‘No Zombies Allowed’?”

She turns to me, gray eyes flashing, kernels of popcorn and – is that brain?!?!? – stuck between her teeth. “Yeah, but it didn’t say anything about ‘No Zombie Queens Allowed,’ now did it?”

I take a step forward and she growls. “I’m NOT doing anything wrong. I’m NOT hurting anybody. So. Leave. Me. Alone. This is my favorite movie and… why shouldn’t zombies be able to watch movies?”

I blink twice. Between the fear and the dread and the living dead in Row 9, I’ve completely forgotten we’re in a movie THEATER!

I turn toward the screen, keeping one eye on the Zombie Queen and the other on the opening scene of Zombie Biker Chicks on Mars 3.

“Ooooh,” I coo admiringly. “I haven’t seen this yet, but the first two were awesome!”

Zombie Queen looks over at me with a kind of grudging respect. “So sit, no one’s stopping you,” she grunts, flicking her cold, gray eyes back to the movie screen.

I bite my lip, suddenly tempted. “Well, actually, I came in here to kick you out.”

Zombie Queen chuckles. “Good luck with that.”

I frown. She kind of has a point. Not that I couldn’t toss this handful of pennies at her and knock her the hell out for most of the movie, but… why? She’s not hurting anyone, I kind of want to see the movie and… am I really in the mood to fight a badass, tiara wearing, popcorn munching zombie?

Sorry: Zombie Queen?

In the end, not so much. “So here’s the thing,” I huff, slumping down a few seats away in the same row. “You can stay and watch the movie under two conditions: One, you don’t try to eat my brain during the second act and two, you take your feet off the chair in front of you.”

She swivels her head, bloody tiara glinting in the glow of the flickering movie screen, and frowns. “You’re really pushing it, you know?”

And yet, down goes the first foot; down goes the second.

She settles in, getting comfortable. I do the same.

She makes a sudden move and I yank two pennies out of my pocket, about to launch them at her fluttering eyeballs. Instead she smiles sweetly, holds out her popcorn bag and says, “Got any fresh blood for this? It’s a little dry…”

Ushers Inc The Zombie Queen of Flickers Cinemas by Rusty Fischer

Ushers Inc
by Rusty Fischer

Published: 6/22/2011

From Goodreads:

When the streets are full of bloodsuckers, werewolves, zombies and ghouls, where will you turn? The cops don’t know how to stop them, the Army’s pretty much given up and even the Marines are stumped when their bullets and grenades fail to stop the onslaught.

Have no fear, Ushers, Inc. is here! Four high school movie ushers, who collectively have seen over 42,000 hours of B- and C-horror movies know just what to do.

Did you know copper pennies can stop a zombie in its tracks? Abby Cooper, Head Usher, does.

Did you know garlic paste is twice as effective on vampires as garlic cloves? Abby Cooper does.

Did you know werewolves are absolutely petrified of seeing a Hershey’s kiss? Abby Cooper does.

The girls at Cypress Cove High school—especially Rich Witch Mia Hopwood—call Abby an uber-geek; the victims she rescues from zombies, werewolves and vampires just call her one thing: Hero!

But Abby and her fearless crew of movie ushers-slash-superheroes face more than just bloodsuckers and brain-biters. There’s Wyatt Winters, for one; he’s the hot new PR guru Ushers, Inc. has had to hire to handle all their press – and with his smoldering good looks and air of confidence, he’s causing more than just tension between Abby and her old boy-crush—and fellow usher—Zach Nash.

And let’s not forget the monsters, who aren’t too happy about four geeky ushers beating their butts all over creation. Now the League of Associated Undead (LAD) is converging on Cypress Cove, determined to stop Ushers, Inc. once and for all.

When it’s the monsters versus the monster hunters, who you gonna call?

Ushers, Inc., that’s who!

Meet Sarah and David.

Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they’re on the verge of divorce and going to couples’ counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things – the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client’s throat.

Meet the Zombies.

Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn’t mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don’t eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

Homosexuality & Zombies? Sunrise by Kody Boye

Kody Boye

Sunrise Homosexuality & Zombies? Sunrise by Kody Boye ____________________

When I was sixteen, I read a zombie novel called Dead Sea by Brian Keene. In it there were a few things that the genre wasn’t particularly familiar with at the time I read it in 2007. The main character was black, the setting was one month after the apocalypse had taken place, and most surprisingly of all—the main character was gay. As a gay sixteen-year-old, and as a teenager at the time, I was utterly enthralled with the idea that someone like me would be featured at the forefront of a horror novel (do note that this is predating the time I knew about Rhiannon Frater’s As the World Dies trilogy, which features a bisexual woman named Katie as one of two leads.) The only problem I had with Keene’s novel was the fact that the main character didn’t feel ‘gay.’ He never met a partner, he never experienced any flashbacks to past relationships, nor did he ever react to past events in a way that would have noted him as gay. That one major flaw in the book, though frustrating to no end, was ultimately what made me write Sunrise. As I mentioned before, at the time I wrote Sunrise, there was still a lack of fiction that featured gay characters, at least in the small press. This, as I said, was the reason I wrote the original novel, but when I took another look at it and re-envisioned it in 2010, I wanted to do one thing—reach out to readers with a character-driven story. At the beginning of our story we meet Dakota Travis, an eighteen-year-old gay man, who has lived the past seven years of his life in the foster care system. When the zombie apocalypse starts, he takes shelter with his Iraqi war veteran friend Steve Earnest, and together they fight through the first month until a situation forces them to flee. They meet with the United States army, and it is there that Dakota meets Corporal Jamie Marks. Their connection is instantaneous, and within a few short days they develop a bond that, to most people, would be incredibly unusual. Given the circumstance, however, their love persists, and together they begin to survive as a couple. You might be wondering how I made Dakota seem like a ‘gay character.’ It’s a true fact that gay and straight people are almost completely alike. In Dakota’s case, however, there were a few things that stuck out for him as his character. These include, but are not limited to: 1) His thoughts about how his deserter father would feel about his sexuality 2) His thoughts on the still-intact DADT in hi universe (Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, which has since been removed from the real world) 3) The friction it causes between them and potential enemies within their midst. It is these conflicts, both internal and external, that fuel conflict within the novel, and by the time the storm of undead comes and threaten their lives, that relentlessly inspires a sense of hope—not only for Dakota and Jamie as a couple, but as survivors of the apocalypse.

By “gay and straight people are almost completely alike” do you mean… they pretty much are complete opposites right? LOL Seeing as how gay men are usually SO much more fun than straight men… and gay women usually try to make out with me. Oh wait… well good thing I never pretended to be ‘politically correct’ and such. icon wink Homosexuality & Zombies? Sunrise by Kody Boye I plan to get to Sunrise very very soon!!! It sounds like a kick ass zombie book, with a side of M/M romance! Epic win!!

From Goodreads:

They said the world would end in 2012. They never said it would end like this. Dakota Travis and his neighbor Steve Earnest have been hiding out in a fortified apartment in the month following the zombie apocalypse, but when a rogue gang uproots them and chance brings one of its members into their midst, there is little the two of them can do but run. They find sanctuary in a converted asylum with members of the United States Army, and while things seem to be safer than before, an underlying strain of tension begins to rule their lives as Sergeant Armstrong, leader of the small military troop, begins to succumb to insanity, while Dakota slowly and slowly begins to find himself becoming attracted to one of the sergeant’s men, a sin that not only transcends traditional military policy, but the moral boundaries of happiness after tragedy terrible enough to destroy the entire world. In a world of the undead, the fierce, the savage and the unthinkable, who can hope to survive one final sunrise?

The Last Bastion of the Living: A Futuristic Zombie Novel
Expected publication: June 12th 2012

The Bastion was humanity’s last hope against the fearsome undead creatures known as the Inferi Scourge. A fortified city with a high wall, surrounded by lush land rich with all the resources needed to survive, protected by high mountain summits, and a massive gate to secure the only pass into the valley, the Bastion became the last stronghold of the living on earth. But one fateful day, the gate failed and the Inferi Scourge destroyed the human settlements outside the walls and trapped the survivors inside the city. Now decades later, the last remaining humans are struggling to survive in a dying city as resources and hope dwindle.

Vanguard Maria Martinez has lived her whole life within the towering walls of steel. She yearns for a life away from the overcrowded streets, rolling blackouts, and food shortages, but there is no hope for anyone as long as the Inferi Scourge howl outside the high walls. Her only refuge from the daily grind is in the arms of her lover, Dwayne Reichardt, an officer in the Bastion Constabulary. Both are highly-decorated veterans of the last disastrous push against the Inferi Scourge. Their secret affair is her only happiness.

Then one day Maria is summoned to meet with a mysterious representative from the Science Warfare Division and is offered the opportunity to finally destroy the Inferi Scourge in the valley and close the gate. The rewards of success are great, but she will have to sacrifice everything, possibly even her life, to accomplish the ultimate goal of securing the future of humanity and saving it from extinction.

Fairy Metal Thunder
by J.L. Bryan
Published: 9/16/2011

From Goodreads:
Jason plays guitar in a teenage garage band called the Assorted Zebras, but they have no fans, no gigs, and they’re going nowhere. Even worse, Jason has a crush on the lead singer, but she already has a near-perfect boyfriend.

Then Jason steals instruments from the fairy world, and soon the band is enchanting crowds, but the new gear is brimming with dangerous and destructive magic. The band struggles to gain control of their instruments and avoid the supernatural bounty hunters sent by Queen Mab of Faerie to track them down…

goodreads Book Review: Fairy Metal Thunder (Songs of Magic #1) by J.L. Bryan

Anyone who’s been following The Bookish Brunette for any extended period of time already knows how much I adore J.L. Bryan’s paranormal, horror series Jenny Pox… In the summer of 2011 he released a brand new YA series about fairies called the Songs of Magic. Fairies and Rock & Roll! Are you kidding?! Win!

With the release of J.L. Bryan’s brand new (GORGEOUS) covers for the Songs of Magic series, and all the seriously awesome reviews it’s been receiving, I thought it was about time for me to finally read them!

The Bookish Brunette thought:

I can’t begin to convey how impressed I was by Fairy Metal Thunder, it was a light, totally cheery and FUN read! J.L. Bryan manages to be beautifully descriptive, without being overly wordy. From fairy wings to fairy dwellings, auditions in the city, dwarf merchants and angry goblins- I was totally overcome by word pictures!!

The night Jason has to skip band practice again to watch his little sister Katie, when he discovers a little green man (GOBLIN!!!) stealing his mother’s ruby earrings! Jason chases him out of the house and over the “wall” encasing Mrs. Dullaham’s house and follows him into… well, he ends up in The Land of Faerie.

When Jason finally catches up to the little green man and proceeds to confront him…

“Leprechauns! I spit on leprechauns!! I tie their shoelaces together to make them trip and fall! Leprechauns, indeed!”
-Grizlemor the Cranky (a.k.a. the Goblin when Jason suggests he’s a Leprechaun!)

To get Jason OUT of Faerie as quickly as possible and without anyone noticing that Grizlemor unknowingly led a HUMAN into the Faerie world, he agrees to give Jason back his things… but while Grizlemor is retrieving Jason’s things- Jason decides to “borrow” four magical fairy instruments that enchant human children!

When Queen Mab discovers that Aoide’s instruments have been stolen and taken out of Faerie, she decrees that Aoide must get them back or she will be put to death! As it violates the Supreme Law to let magic leak into the human world!

The keyboard sprouted silver wires that snaked around and plugged into Mitch’s other keyboards.

Aoide and Rhodia, the fae that Jason stole the instruments from, are then forced to travel with Icarus (a member of the Queen’s guard) through the swamps to illicit the help of Hoke, the ELF and his cornhorses (unicorns!!!!!). Now thousands of years ago there was a Great Elf and Fairy War, and the fae won. So you can imagine how highly Hoke thinks of Queen Mab and fairies in general… icon smile Book Review: Fairy Metal Thunder (Songs of Magic #1) by J.L. Bryan

Grizlemor (the Cranky… *hehe*) shows up to try and steal the instruments back from Jason and his friends- before finally giving up and MOVING into Jason’s room!!! Under his bed to be exact. So NOW, Grizlemor is trying to HELP Jason keep the instruments hidden from Queen Mab so as to avoid getting in trouble himself! WIN.

“Well, young sir, I can’t live at my home anymore, and it’s all on account of you. So by my measure of justice, it’s your job to provide suitable lodging during my displacement.”

If you can’t tell… While I loved this book, the characters, the world, the setting… Absolutely everything- Grizlemore TOTALLY stole the show for me! He may be a minor and secondary character, but I LOVED him!

One of the main things I LOVED about Fairy Metal Thunder was Jason’s FAMILY. His overbearing, constantly involved, CARING parents. I feel like in Young Adult fiction there are just too many books that have absent parents… For whatever reason. And Katie- Katie was an AMAZING baby sister!

This book, from the characters to the entire plot and setting was just AMAZING. The entire time you’re pulling for Jason and the Assorted Zebra’s, you’re also REALLY feeling bad for the fairies! You completely want them to get their instruments BACK!

“You’ll only draw the fairies attention. And they’ll be quite vengeful.”

“How vengeful?”

“Have you ever been pecked to death by a vulture? Or slowly eaten from the inside by slime worms? Or ripped apart by a blunt-toothed brain bug?”

J.L. Bryan hit the ball completely out of the park with awesome in Fairy Metal Thunder.
